50 States Challenge

Using Gamification to Build Team Engagement

The 50 States Challenge turns normal call flow into a lightweight team game. Agents claim states based on caller locations, teams compete on progress, and leaders get a fun way to create energy without interrupting the workday.

Role

Designed the game mechanics, built the app structure, shaped the admin workflow, and tuned the experience around call center culture.

Audience

Agents, team leads, and call center teams

Stack

Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Docker

Problem

The team needed simple culture-building ideas that could work during the day without disrupting call handling. The challenge had to be easy to understand, quick to update, and visible enough to keep people participating.

Solution

Built a gamification web app with team maps, leaderboards, admin updates, and reset controls. The structure supports multiple teams while keeping the core interaction simple: claim states, track progress, and compete.

Impact

Turned normal call volume into a friendly team competition while encouraging participation and giving leaders a lightweight engagement tool that fits into the existing workday.

Build Process

How the work came together

The important part of each project is not only what was built, but how it fit the real workflow around it.

1

Started with the simplest possible rule set so agents could understand it immediately.

2

Built the map and leaderboard around team progress rather than individual complexity.

3

Added admin tooling so updates and resets can happen without touching code.

4

Designed the app to support multiple teams and recurring challenge cycles.

5

Kept the visual language energetic while staying practical for repeated use.

Deliverables

  • Interactive state-tracking experience
  • Team-based maps
  • Leaderboards
  • Admin update and reset tools
  • Docker-ready app packaging

Signals Tracked

  • States claimed by team
  • Leaderboard progress
  • Team participation
  • Reset and admin update flow

Lessons

  • Good internal tools do not always need to be serious to be useful.
  • The best engagement mechanics fit into the work people are already doing.
  • Admin controls are not a bonus feature; they decide whether the tool can survive real use.
